From Table to Tide: Celebrating 29 Million Oysters Recycled

There’s something special about enjoying fresh Gulf oysters along the Alabama coast. But what happens after the last shell is emptied? Thanks to the Oyster Shell Recycling Program, those shells are getting a second life—and making a massive impact. Today, we’re proud to celebrate a major milestone: Over 29 million oyster shells collected and recycled across Alabama.

What Is the Oyster Shell Recycling Program?

Launched in 2016 by the Alabama Coastal Foundation, the Oyster Shell Recycling Program partners with local restaurants to collect used oyster shells and return them to Alabama waters.

Instead of ending up in landfills, these shells are:

Collected from participating restaurants
Cleaned and cured over time
Placed back into coastal waters to help form new oyster reefs

This simple but powerful process helps:

Grow new oysters
Improve water quality
Provide habitat for marine life
Reduce shoreline erosion

Why Oyster Shells Matter

Oyster shells aren’t just waste—they’re essential to the ecosystem. Baby oysters naturally attach to existing shells to grow. Without them, rebuilding reefs becomes much more difficult.

Healthy oyster reefs:

Filter and clean water
Support fish, shrimp, and crabs
Protect coastlines from storms and erosion

In fact, oyster reefs can even act as natural barriers, helping defend the coast against wave energy and rising sea levels.

A Major Milestone: 29 Million Shells and Counting

Reaching 29 million recycled oyster shells is more than just a number—it represents years of collaboration between restaurants, environmental organizations, and the community. Since its launch, the program has grown from a small local initiative into a statewide effort, diverting millions of shells from landfills and putting them back where they belong—into the water. Each shell returned helps rebuild Alabama’s coastline and ensures future generations can continue to enjoy fresh Gulf oysters.

Nominated as one of the " Best Waterfront Restaurants " in the nation

The largest news publication in the country, USA Today, has nominated COAST AL Orange Beach as one of the " Best Waterfront Restaurants " in the nation. Their millions of readers will now vote which is #1 in the United States. Other eatery locations include California, Carolinas and Hawaii, but COASTAL represents the gulf coast.

The USA Today writers described the premise for the vote." We first eat with our eyes, as the saying goes, and waterfront restaurants offer breathtaking views beyond the beauty of the food they serve. Pairing culinary delights against the picturesque backdrops of lakes, rivers, and oceans, every meal is a feast for the senses."

Residents, tourist and lovers of the Alabama coast can now VOTE and show the nation our beachside culinary scene. You can vote once per day until polls close on Monday, April 13 at noon ET. The winning waterfront restaurants, as determined by your vote, will be announced on Wednesday, April 22.

Gumbo Fest 2025: A Record-Breaking Celebration

Our second annual Gumbo Fest at CoastAL Orange Beach was bigger, bolder, and even more flavorful than our debut year! What started as a new community tradition in 2024 has already grown into one of the Gulf Coast’s favorite fall celebrations.

With the beach as our backdrop, Big Al & The Heavyweights once again brought the perfect vibe with their live music, while families, friends, and gumbo lovers gathered to taste, cheer, and “roux” the day away. The energy was incredible, the competition was fierce, and the gumbo - well, it spoke for itself!

A huge congratulations to this year’s winners:

1st Place – Team Pelican Grill
2nd Place – Mardi Gras Gumbo
3rd Place – Uncle Squigs Gumbo
People’s Choice – Bama Cajuns
Best Decorated Tent – PDS Flamingos

Thanks to the amazing turnout and the continued support of our community, we were able to raise $4,115 for the Baldwin County Hospitality Scholarship - doubling last year’s total!

We couldn’t be prouder of how this event has grown or more grateful to everyone who participated, attended, and volunteered to make Gumbo Fest such a success.

Join us at COAST AL Orange Beach for Alabama Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, September 20th!

At COAST AL Orange Beach, we are dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of our coastline, and we are proud to once again partner with Alabama Coastal Cleanup for this year’s beach cleanup event.

The cleanup will take place on Saturday, September 20, 2025, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM at COAST AL Orange Beach. We welcome the entire community to come together and help us protect and care for our shoreline.

All necessary supplies, including gloves and trash bags, will be provided. To thank our volunteers for their efforts, each participant will receive a coupon for a free COAST AL breakfast sandwich to enjoy after the cleanup.

Our first ever Gumbo Fest at CoastAL Orange Beach was a celebration of incredible food, community spirit, and a shared love for the Gulf Coast. With breathtaking views and live music from Big Al & The Heavyweights setting the vibe, the event truly came alive as families, friends, and gumbo enthusiasts gathered to savor the best gumbo this area has to offer.

People's Choice - Krewe of Gumbeaux

Thanks to the incredible turnout and the enthusiastic support of our 20 competing teams, we raised $2,500 for a scholarship supporting a Baldwin County student pursuing a career in hospitality. This donation will help a local student on their journey into the field we all know and love, making Gumbo Fest a celebration not only of our favorite Southern dish but also of the next generation of culinary talent.

Fall rates drop but the weather is amazing

If you ask locals about when to visit the beach most will tell you the fall and spring seasons are the best. Some may be influenced by the reduced traffic but most will mention the amazing weather and lack of humidity.

Rental rates during the fall and spring rates are also reduced. Many are priced at half of the summer rate and can offer free-night specials.

Actually, everything is priced better during the "Off Season." The Orange Beach Store management is promoting reduced pricing and combination specials on some items.

Book your trip to the beach and enjoy brisk winds while listening to the surf roll into the shore. Come visit Coast-AL for breakfast and plan (or un-plan) your day. Afterwards, you can take a leisurely stroll to the Orange Beach Store for all your beach needs.

At CoastAL Orange Beach, we’re dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of our coastline, and we’re thrilled to partner with Alabama Coastal Cleanup for an upcoming beach cleanup event. On September 21, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, we invite the entire community to come out and help us clean our beautiful shores.

All of the necessary supplies for the cleanup will be provided including gloves and trash bags. In additional to the satisfaction of helping to preserve our coast, each volunteer will receive a coupon for a FREE breakfast sandwich from CoastAL to be used after the cleanup to thank you for your hard work and dedication.

Annual Alabama Seafood Cook-Off Features Coast-AL’s Own Chef Emilio Urban

Alabama Gulf Seafood has chosen Emilio Urban, chef from Coast-AL Orange Beach, to represent them in the 9th Annual Alabama Seafood Cook-Off, as announced by the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission.

Chef Emilio is originally from Fairhope, AL, and now calls Gulf Shores, AL home. He carries with him 17 years of culinary industry experience and Coast-AL Orange Beach is more than grateful to have him as a member of the incredibly talented culinary team!

Chefs from all over Alabama were invited to submit recipes highlighting Alabama Gulf Seafood. These recipes were anonymized and reviewed by an expert panel of judges who selected the participants. Here are the chefs and their chosen recipes:

Chef Laurence Agnew: "King Billy Whelkomes You" - Charcoal-grilled Alabama croaker "On the half shell," Gulf whelk & Admiral Oyster stew with blue crab fat croutons, fennel, celery & purple deadnettle Italian salsa verde.
Chef Robbie Nicolaisen: Charcoal-grilled triggerfish, blue crab & Conecuh sausage spoon-bread, dressed sea beans, burnt lemon & "she-crab" beurre blanc.
Chef Kyle Ogden: "Spring Tide" - Pompano filet with crab and shrimp mousse, focaccia stuffing, arugula pesto, gai lan agrodolce, Fresno chili emulsion, and more.
Chef Emilio Urban: "Fruits of the Gulf" - Spiced Gulf shrimp, pickled cucumbers, hibiscus fumet foam, roasted yellow pepper beurre blanc, garnished with black bean crunch and Spanish mackerel floss, mackerel chicharron.

The events kick off on Sunday with a Gulf seafood-themed welcome dinner prepared by Executive Chef Brody Olive, a previous winner of both the statewide and national competitions.

On Monday, May 6, the chefs will visit the Claude Peteet Mariculture Center, a facility dedicated to the production, restocking, and research of select Gulf species.

The cook-off will take place at The Wharf's Marlin Circle starting at 6 p.m. on Monday. Each chef and their team will have one hour to prepare their dishes and present them to a panel of industry judges:

Chef Jim Smith: Owner and executive chef at Mobile's The Hummingbird Way, board chairman of the ASMC, and 2011 winner of the ASCO and national seafood cook-off.
Chef Brody Olive: Executive chef at Voyagers and 2023 winner of ASCO and the national cook-off.

The relocation to The Wharf this year was made in hopes of attracting more spectators. French Toast Fabulousness

The French toast Americans are familiar with today includes egg and milk-soaked bread griddled and served with butter and syrup. It's a popular breakfast and brunch dish, as comforting as a stack of pancakes, and just as delicious. The dish comes together quickly enough to satisfy anyone's weekday morning craving.

It's widely believed that French toast was influenced by the French dish “Payn Perdu”. Each dish features roughly the same ingredients and the same method of preparation. But it wasn't the French who first created it. It turns out that the idea of French toast began as early as the days of ancient Rome.

The earliest recorded record of a dish resembling French toast was discovered in a 4th-century Roman cookbook by Marcus Gabius Apicius called Cooking and Dining in Imperial Rome . The recipe is called “aliter dulcia” (translation: "another sweet dish") and describes pieces of crustless white bread that are soaked in milk and beaten egg, then fried in oil and doused with honey.

As far as the name "French toast" goes, it's believed that the name was an accident. Innkeeper and Albany, New York resident Joseph French introduced the dish in 1724, intending to call it "French's toast" but a grammatical error deleted the apostrophe and the "s" at the end. By 1871, the term "French toast" appeared in the Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink in North America.

A lot of countries across the globe have versions of what America describes as French toast. The payn perdu (which means "lost bread" in French) is a custardy, rich version made with stale or day-old bread. This concept has many names according to country. Some of them include Spanish toast, German toast, eggy bread, and Gypsy toast.

In Spain during the period of Lent, “torrijas” are popular, which are a spin on French toast as well. Here, stale bread is soaked in milk or wine plus honey and spices. These are dipped in egg and then fried in olive oil. Hong Kong serves their French toast with peanut butter and in New Zealand, it will come topped with bacon, bananas, maple syrup, and cinnamon.

And in the United States, the sky's the limit on what you can flavor French toast with. In Creole cuisine, the egg and milk mixture is often spiked with booze; during the winter, milk is often replaced with eggnog. French toast can be served with all sorts of fruits, jams, nut butter, and unexpected spices. And it's all thanks to ancient Rome.

So, just what is food plating? Well, food plating is arranging and decorating the food on the plate to enhance its presentation visually. It adds value to the dining experience. It proves the age-old adage that we eat with our eyes!

Techniques can be quick and easy to follow with the right tools and an eye for placement and color. But, don’t forget that the most important element is the taste of the food! You have to strive for a balance between taste and presentation.

Elements of plating work elevate the dining experience, build a reputation, encourage creativity, create free advertising, and increase appetite. Along with these advantages, it can also help entice a picky eater and encourage slower eating.

Since eating is an experience for all of the senses, it becomes an experience that diners want to continue to repeat. The secret to success is having the right tools. For example, an egg ring or a zester can create interesting shapes, drizzle sauce on the plate, and even elevate a dessert.

Some additional tools to use would be a moulin or triturator. These work by pressing and pulverizing ingredients making a silky smooth texture that you would not be able to achieve by hand.

CoastAL Orange Beach Brings Eggs Benedict to the Table.

Eggs Benedict - Who do we thank?

Who should we thank for Eggs Benedict? Was it the ask of Mrs. LeGrand Benedict for something new, Lemuel Benedict’s search for a hangover cure, or Commodore E.C. Benedict’s personal taste that led to the invention of this brunch favorite?

Eggs Benedict is one of the most popular American dishes. Thanks to the Hollandaise sauce on top, it is a creamy, lemony, buttery delight. Not to mention that it is a quick dish to make, making it an ideal choice for busy mornings.

Credit for inventing the dish is subject to some confusion. There is the Delmonico Restaurant Theory. The story goes back to the 1860s. The story has it that there was a lady, Mrs. LeGrand Benedict, who dined at the Delmonico restaurant often and became tired of the menu. She wanted something new. So, she consulted with the chef, Charles Ranhofer, about new options. The chef then created Eggs Benedict for her to try. Delmonico claimed that their restaurant was the first to use printed menus, the first to hire women, and the first to serve Eggs Benedict.

The chef’s entree was written up in a cookbook called The Epicurean around 120 years ago. This cookbook helped other chefs learn how to make the dish to serve at their restaurants. It was first called Eggs á la Benedick but is now referred to as Eggs Benedict and served in restaurants worldwide.

There is also the Hangover Cure. This story was set back in 1942, when Lemuel Benedict, a retired Wall Street stockbroker, visited the Waldorf Hotel in search of a cure for his morning hangover. Lemuel ordered a combination of buttered toast, poached eggs, crisp bacon, and hollandaise sauce. The Head Chef Oscar Tschirky was so impressed with this combination of elements that he refined the dish by substituting Canadian bacon for salty, crispy bacon and used an English muffin in place of the buttery toast, giving it the name Eggs Benedict. As a side note, Tschirky is also the inventor of the Waldorf salad.

Then there is the Pass The Parcel theory. In 1967 an article was published in The New York Times by Craig Claiborne. It talked about the story of Eggs Benedict and its history. Craig had received a letter from Edward P. Montgomery, an American living in France. He mentioned that Commodore Benedict created Eggs Benedict. He provided a recipe for the dish. However, the ingredients in the recipe are less common in this version than the Eggs Benedict that we have come to love. Perhaps it was because of a lack of available ingredients or personal taste but no one can be sure because Commodore passed away in 1920.

Beach Renourishment Project Update from Orange Beach Coastal Resources:

The beach renourishment operation has begun in Orange Beach. The latest updates from Olsen Associates on the project can be found at https://olsen-associates.com/gsob/ .

Heavy equipment is on the beach, and the public is asked to be respectful of work areas. Beachgoers must stay out of work zones while the dredging operation is ongoing.

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company finished pumping sand to Gulf State Park on Tuesday and transitioned toward Romar Beach. The operation will continue to progress westward from the pipe landing near Sugar Beach.

The Contractor plans to perform beach tilling in Gulf State Park later this week. Sand fencing installation in certain areas of Gulf Shores will begin in late January. The newly rebuilt dune will be planted in the spring.

As a reminder, the operation will run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until the project is complete to restore the beaches following Hurricanes Nate and Sally. In total, the project will place over 2 million cubic yards of sand along five segments of the shoreline from Laguna Key eastward to the AL/FL State Line on Perdido Key. The project is expected to last through February 2024.

Starting from the early days of Christianity and topped with the traditional colors of Mardi Gras - purple, representing justice, green representing faith, and gold representing power, the King Cake honors the three kings who visited Christ on Epiphany, the 12th day after Christmas. Its circular shape represents their unity of faith.

With every King Cake comes a hidden prize - a tiny baby figurine or other small token. While

Folklore says the token represents the Baby Jesus, it’s also believed to come from the Louisiana tradition of hiding a small prize in one slice of cake during the king’s ball. Then, when someone finds the prize, they are crowned the “king” or “queen” of the ball. Nowadays, whoever finds the baby in their slice is said to have gained good fortune and must host the next celebration and serve another King Cake. This goes on until Fat Tuesday!

How is a King Cake made? The base of the king cake is made of cinnamon dough that is braided together. The dough is covered with poured sugar and colored sugar sprinkles. Some varieties may even include fillings like cream cheese, strawberry, lemon, and other flavors.

A stunning view of the Gulf of Mexico and a menu to please all your taste buds is exactly what you can expect at Orange Beach’s newest restaurant. COASTAL is much more than a restaurant. It’s a mini compound with a restaurant, a beach bar and a retail shop.

COASTAL is much more than a restaurant. It’s a mini compound with a restaurant, a beach bar and a retail shop.

John McInnis has been in the beach bar business for about 10 years with Cameron Price. The two are part owners of Flora-Bama, and they decided to come together for this latest venture a few years ago.

With inspiration from some of their favorite beach bars, including in the Bahamas and other parts of the Virgin Islands, the concept became a reality.

“We dreamed up the idea of taking everything we’ve learned and turning it into one restaurant, and that’s what culminated in the creation of COASTAL,” McInnis said.

COASTAL is more than a restaurant. The property offers serene sights and sounds that will turn an ordinary day or vacation into an unforgettable experience.

McInnis said he was able to come to an agreement with the city of Orange Beach to purchase the beautiful beachfront property during COVID jointly. It was originally zoned for 600 condos.

“So, it was the largest residential-density property zoned on the Gulf of Mexico,” McInnis added. “For some reason, it was never developed and it being at the intersection of Beach Road and Highway 161, it’s really a main street. Every car that comes into Orange Beach comes to that site.”

Thanks to an agreement with Orange Beach, anyone can enjoy the area.

“The entryway to the city is now open to the public forever and it’s not big condos right there at the intersection, so it was a big win for all of us who live here at Orange Beach and for people that visit because they can now come down and sit and eat on the beach,” said McInnis.

Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon said the investment was a win/win for the city and the business owners.

“It’s been a perfect example of a private/public partnership because neither one of us could have done it alone,” Kennon added. “But the two of us combining to split the cost of the property allowed it to happen. We have a public beach now just for our residents.”

From the beach bar to the restaurant, the décor is spectacular at COASTAL.

The restaurant also has large garage doors that can roll up and down. And, of course, there is a stage for live music.

“The views are unobstructed east and west,” Kennon said. “The site is elevated about 20 feet so you can have a really improved view of the water. I think it’s one of the best projects we’ve done.”

In all, there are 1,200 restaurant seats, and the property can hold around 2,000 people comfortably.

And what is a restaurant without a unique and “completely badass” menu? McGinnis left that part up to the experts while offering suggestions. Island Entertainment Corporate Chef Chris Dickens and Executive Chef Mark Smith took fresh and local to a whole new level for COASTAL’s ever-changing menu.

“It’s a mixture of items,” said McInnis. “It’s very, very nice food, very fresh food, nothing frozen. You can get anything from a fried shrimp basket to a nice filet or fish dish. So, you can get anything you want.”

Sourcing locally from the Gulf or the southeastern states, COASTAL offers the best versions of local catches.

“We’re in a very special region,” Dickens told 1819 News. “This little stretch is one of the few between Port St. Joe and into Mississippi, where we have a really great seafood availability. In particular, the fresh blue crab and we’re really the last places that still have guys that can put out these heavy traps. So, focusing on the resources that God and Alabama have blessed us with was important. That’s fresh coastal seafood like grouper, snapper, Mahi and fresh blue crab.”

Dickens said the chefs also have partnerships with local growers of fruits and vegetables. He said that is what helps make COASTAL’s menu one of the best around.

The menu changes from time to time, depending on what is in season. However, there will be some top-quality items that will stay. Even the turkey club is unique. The entire process of making the club is done in-house.

“It’s a pretty extensive process,” Dickens explained. “We take the fresh turkey breast and we brine them out. After that, we smoke them in house. We’re doing all of our fabrication, all of our slicing and really people can recognize the quality of that.”

Even the beef is sourced out of Flatonia, Texas, from HeartBrand beef.

“It’s one of the best burgers, in my opinion, in the country,” said Dickens. “From the standpoint of the cattle breed, Akaushi cattle is the only cattle breed in the world that can be labeled potentially ‘heart-friendly’ because of the way it processes in the body. It is a really clean beef that we use in our burgers.”

A unique partnership landed this restaurant on a prime Alabama beach

CoastAL certainly isn’t hard to find, since it’s at the biggest intersection in a small city. “Location, location, location” is a real estate adage that doesn’t really fit the restaurant business. But a hot new spot in Orange Beach does call it to mind.

I recently voyaged to Perdido Key to investigate suspicious reports of UFMs (unidentified flying mullets), and despite the tempting abundance of food at the Flora-Bama, I opted to leverage the trip into a stop someplace a little more upscale.

I had something specific in mind: CoastAL Orange Beach, an open-air dining experience that opened just a few months ago right on the beach. And there we are, right back at location.

The beginning of the CoastAL story is all about real estate: A Gulf-front parcel right where Ala. 161, coming down from the direction of The Wharf and the Beach Express, tees into Ala. 182, aka Perdido Beach Boulevard. When you think about it, it’s kind of amazing the spot didn’t become the foundation of a high-rise condo tower long ago. But it was headed for that fate.

Instead, unprecedented circumstances opened the way for something else to happen. Something that involved a partnership between the city of Orange Beach and Orange Beach Land Co. – a company that is owned by John McInnis III and Cameron Price, who also are among the owners of the Flora-Bama entertainment complex.

“We were blessed to be able to acquire that property, it was eight acres, in the heart of Orange Beach, and the only reason we were able to acquire a piece of property that was zoned for 700 condos was COVID was going on,” said McInnis. “So the economy allowed for us to be able to afford to get it, and the city – including me and all the residents down here -- would probably rather not have as many condos as we have, these days. So the city rezoned the property from residential to commercial, we got rid of 700 [planned] condos at the main intersection of the city, and so instead of now a concrete wall at our entrance, you’ve got a beautiful, large, piece of beachfront property that’s available to the public forever.”

“The city of Orange Beach, actually, until now, did not own a beach,” said McInnis. “All we had was state park or federal park. This presented the opportunity to have the first city-owned beach and so we partnered with them, we bought half the property, they bought half the property. They allowed us to use their parking lot and we allow all the citizens of Orange Beach to use our beach. And it worked perfectly.”

What McInnis calls Phase 1 opened in November. From the parking area there’s a boardwalk heading to the beach and a ramp leading to the open-air bar and restaurant. From there you can see both the beach and the retail side, CoastAL Clothing Co. On the east side is the Phase 2 indoor restaurant that will open any day now. It’ll have a bigger menu and, according to promotional materials, it’ll add 20,000 square feet of dining space, bringing CoastAL to a total of 1,200 seats.

CoastAL certainly isn’t hard to find, since it’s at the biggest intersection in a small city. The deal with the parking lot is that access is shared between local residents, for whom it is free public parking, and CoastAL patrons, who also get beach access. As I pulled in, I explained to an attendant that I was there to dine and I was waved right in. (I’d venture to guess that if you wheeled in with Louisiana plates and made straight for the beach with a cooler full of Bud Light, things might not go so smoothly.)

McInnis said that he and Price wanted CoastAL to combine some of the best elements they’d found in other beach bars, and it’s a subject they know a thing or two about.

“My partner Cameron and I have been in the beach bar business now for almost two decades,” said McInnis. “We grew up both loving beach bars. I grew up down here at the beach and in the Virgin Islands and Cameron grew up partly in Hawaii and in California. When we got that property, the property’s so rare, because most beachfront property is developed now, we decided we would take all the best things from every good beach bar we’ve loved.”

In addition to the various Flora-Bama properties, they also have businesses in Florida’s 30A corridor, he said. “We combined them all into one new place and one new concept. We feel like it’s a little bit of everything.”

Does that sound like a mishmash? CoastAL definitely is not that. From the ground up, its light décor and open layout are tuned to make you feel like there’s as little as possible between you and the Gulf. (One exception: screens that can be lowered to put a little something between you and the sun. A staffer was dropping some of these as I took my place at the huge expanse of bar, and I was grateful for the reduced glare. But if you want full sun, there’s true al fresco dining outside the main pavilion.)

I’m only one man, but the Phase 1 menu isn’t huge. A few appetizers, including fried crab claws and yellowfin tuna dip; a couple of salads, which you can top with various protein sources include shrimp and Gulf grouper; a few sandwiches, including a burger; baskets and “signature island tacos;” and a couple of dessert choices including bushwacker tiramisu. If those last two words didn’t make your mouth start watering, you may be dead.

I was especially pleased to see that the kid’s menu includes grouper pieces, not just chicken nuggets and popcorn shrimp. Start ‘em right.

On McInnis’ advice, I ordered the grouper tacos ($20) following the tuna poke nachos appetizer ($18).

The appetizer was way to big for one person but I have no regrets about what I did and I’d do it again. The menu describes it as an amalgamation of “Yellowfin Ahi Tuna, spicy mayo, CoastAL slaw, avocado, mango cubes, toasted sesame seeds, won-tons, micro cilantro and sesame glaze.” That sounds like a lot going on, maybe too much, but it all works together.

The chips are more in the light, crispy mode of wonton crisps than standard, garden-variety tortilla chips. The toppings provide a rainbow of flavors and textures but the quality of the tuna stands out despite everything else going on. The sesame glaze in particular is maddeningly good. Left to my own devices, I’d have drowned the dish in it. But the folks at CoastAL are smarter than that and used a light hand. That left me coming back to the dish, always looking for the next little sesame flavor rush.

They’re pretty, too, topped by a flower blossom. I was assured I could eat it without experiencing visions on the drive back to Mobile, but opted not to. Whether you eat the flower or not, you could do a lot worse than to order this app as an entrée.

As for my main dish, I opted for fried grouper in my tacos and was pleased to see the same light, clean approach carry over. You can make a fried fish taco with virtually any fish, and people do, but if you’re going to use something really good, you want it to pay off. CoastAL’s tacos weren’t overloaded with toppings and sauces. They weren’t bare, by any means: the fish sat on a bed of slaw and had a topping of pickle relish and tartar sauce. But everything was calibrated to embellish the grouper, not cloak it. You won’t bite down on these and think it might as well have been tilapia.

Truth be told, I drew the line there and opted to save the bushwacker tiramisu for another time. And next time, I’ll remember to bring a beach towel. Because at CoastAL Orange Beach, the food – as good as it is – is half the attraction.

CoastAL development in Orange Beach completes phase 1

CoastAL, a beachfront retail, bar and restaurant establishment at the intersection of HWY 161 and Perdido Beach Blvd is up and running, welcoming locals and visitors.

Jeff Quinlan, an Orange Beach local, said he has been waiting for a long time for the venue to open.

“Great spot, you can’t beat the view,” said Quinlan.

The people behind the project hope it will stand apart. Steve Powers, Marketing Director at CoastAL, is excited and said that CoastAL is a one and only beachfront three-in-one development.

“We are the only Gulf front on the beach dining, in Orange Beach, so it’s in the heart of Orange Beach, we are so happy to be here, you can walk on the boardwalk and you are standing on the Gulf of Mexico,” Powers said.

Aside from the food and shopping, the City of Orange Beach bought half the land that CoastAL sits on, to enable residents to park for free.

“Being able to pull in, in the summertime and actually get to the beach, is going to be great” Quinlan said.

The next phase of the project will include a larger restaurant, allowing more room to seat people for less wait time during crowded seasons.

“We will end up having about 1200 seats for patrons here, we are at about 420 right now,” Powers said.

Phase 2 is currently under construction and is set to open by March or April 2023.

As part of that agreement, there’s a designated parking area for Orange Beach city residents only with access to the new public beach area. Additional parking spaces will be shared between restaurant patrons and restaurant beachgoers.

Built on 800 feet of prime beachfront property, COAST-AL features an outdoor bar with a full kitchen, 15,000 square feet of open-air green space, and a 7,000 square foot lifestyle retail building known as COAST-AL Clothing Company. Phase 1 is now open and ready for business.

COAST-AL is open at 11am daily for lunch, dinner and bar service with live music every day. Parking is currently limited to Orange Beach residents and restaurant customers. First come first serve parking until Orange Beach resident passes are issued in April 2023.

Phase 2 of the project will be completed in Spring 2023 and features an additional 20,000 square feet of dining space, bringing the total to 1,200 seats available, plus an iconic 40-foot-tall landmark tower that is tied into the property.

COAST-AL Co-Owner, John McInnis, said “The vision was to remove 600 more concrete condos at the main intersection of the city roads and provide an open air space available to the public. We hope Alabama and the Gulf Coast are proud of it and it becomes a destination.” With gorgeous unobstructed pristine white beachy views, COAST-AL is sure to provide a dining and beach experience unlike any other in the area. Stroll along the water, squish your toes in the sand, walk up to enjoy a cocktail or two, and dine while watching the brightest, orange and pink sunset, immediately setting your soul at ease. The ambiance is unmatchable.

While the building process takes time, the finish line is here and the rewards are worth it. COAST-AL has the community buzzing and the staff beaming.

COAST-AL Co-Owner, Cameron Price, is most excited about “the opportunity to bring people together to enjoy family, hang out with friends and to meet new friends”. With live music 365 days a year, a locally sourced menu with fresh seafood, local fare, healthy salads, and some other hearty dishes, it will surely be a gathering place in the community. Price says they will “excel in hospitality, making sure that everyone is welcome - both residents of Orange Beach, all of our locals, and people visiting this wonderful community.” The Gulf Coast is a slice of paradise and with this new establishment being added to it, it just got a little better. This may not only be a first stop on any trip, but it just might be your forever spot too.
